Organize shop categories and product navigation
Quick summary: Group products into customer-facing categories and verify the resulting catalog navigation.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”You need access to eCommerce categories and products; changing the visible catalog layout also requires website editing rights. Agree the category structure first. E-commerce categories organize the shop and are separate from internal product categories used for business settings.
Create and assign categories
Section titled “Create and assign categories”- Open eCommerce Categories and search for the intended category before clicking New.
- Enter a clear customer-facing name. Select Parent Category for a subcategory; leave it empty for a top-level category. Avoid duplicating the same label under unrelated parents unless visitors can distinguish the branches.
- Add the category image, description and cover image where useful. For multiple websites, check the website restriction. Translate the name and description into the website languages, then save.
- Open the relevant eCommerce products and assign the category in their sales/e-commerce settings. A product may belong to more than one public category when that helps discovery.
- Return to the category list and use the drag handle to arrange categories in the intended order. Verify the parent-child structure after moving or renaming items.
Check the shop navigation
Section titled “Check the shop navigation”- Open the website shop as an editor. If category navigation is not displayed, edit the catalog section and enable the desired category placement in its style options, then save.
- Visit the shop as a visitor. Open the parent and child categories and confirm they show the expected published products. Check the mobile filter panel as well as desktop navigation.
- Switch website language and verify category labels and descriptions. If a category appears empty, check product publication, website scope, category assignment and active filters before changing the structure.
Result
Section titled “Result”Customers can browse the catalog by a consistent category hierarchy. Reassigning an e-commerce category does not change the product’s accounting or stock category. Before deleting or substantially renaming a category, review links from menus, campaigns and existing pages so visitors do not reach an obsolete destination.
Continue with product publication.
